I own three black tote bags. One lives by the front door for errands. One stays packed in my suitcase as a day bag. The third is a slightly nicer nylon one for situations where a backpack feels too casual. None of them were expensive. All of them get used constantly. There’s nothing glamorous about a black tote, which is precisely the point – it works everywhere without drawing attention.
Why Black?
Practicality. Light-coloured bags show stains, scuff marks, and general wear. Black hides all of it. After six months of use, a black tote still looks presentable. A cream canvas bag? Less so.
Black also works in any setting – beach, airport, museum, restaurant. You’re not matching your bag to your outfit; it just works.
Materials to Consider
Cotton Canvas: Affordable, washable, and sturdy enough for daily use. The downside is that it absorbs water and stains more easily than synthetic alternatives. Best for dry conditions and lighter loads.
Nylon: Lightweight, water-resistant, and durable. Packable versions fold into a pouch and weigh almost nothing. Good for travel as a backup bag.
Polyester: Similar to nylon but often cheaper. Less soft to the touch but handles wear well.
Leather: More expensive and heavier, but ages well if maintained. Not ideal for beach trips or rainy weather, but good for business travel or city breaks.
Recycled Materials: Many brands now make totes from recycled plastic bottles. Quality varies, but the better ones are genuinely durable.
What Size Do You Need?
For a day bag, look for something that holds a water bottle, book, light jacket, and wallet without being half empty. Around 15-20 litres is usually right.
For shopping or beach use, larger is better – 25+ litres gives you room for towels, sunscreen, and whatever you pick up along the way.
For air travel, check that it fits under the seat in front (typically 40x30x15cm or similar). A tote that’s too large becomes carry-on luggage, not a personal item.
Features That Matter
Pockets: At least one interior pocket for phone and keys. Without it, you’re fishing around the bottom of the bag for small items.
Closure: Open-top bags are convenient but insecure. A zip or magnetic snap adds peace of mind in crowded places.
Strap length: Should sit comfortably on your shoulder without sliding off or digging in. Padded straps help with heavier loads.
Reinforced bottom: Particularly for canvas bags, a reinforced base prevents the bag from sagging when loaded.
Water resistance: Useful for unpredictable weather. Full waterproofing isn’t necessary for most purposes, but a water-resistant coating helps.

What I Actually Use
For travel, my go-to is a black nylon tote with one interior pocket and a zip closure. It cost about £20, weighs nothing, and folds flat in my luggage. The zip matters more than I expected – knowing my phone and wallet aren’t going to fall out when I put the bag down gives peace of mind.
For everyday use, a simple cotton canvas bag does the job. Mine cost £5 and has lasted two years of grocery runs. When it eventually wears out, I’ll replace it without a second thought.
Black totes aren’t exciting, but that’s the point. They’re reliable, practical, and blend into any situation. I’ve never once regretted packing one.
