Etihad Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Excess Fees

ProductsTravel Tips

I’ve watched passengers at the Abu Dhabi check-in desk discover their cheapest fare comes with zero checked luggage — and the look on their faces when they’re quoted airport excess fees is something I’d rather avoid myself. The Etihad baggage allowance varies significantly depending on which fare type you booked, and the Economy Basic tier is genuinely the most common trap I see people fall into. Whether you’re heading to Abu Dhabi on a long weekend or flying through to Australia, understanding your Etihad baggage allowance before you reach the airport makes a real difference to what you actually pay.

Quick facts — Etihad baggage allowance 2026

  • Cabin bag: 7kg / 56 × 36 × 23 cm (Economy); 12kg combined (Business/First)
  • Economy Basic: no checked bag included at all
  • Maximum per individual bag: 32kg hard limit — Etihad will not accept bags over this weight regardless of payment
  • Golf clubs: 1 set carried free, on top of your standard allowance
  • Pre-purchasing extra baggage online saves up to 65% versus airport prices

Cabin Baggage

In Economy, you get one cabin bag weighing up to 7kg, with maximum dimensions of 56 × 36 × 23 cm. That’s a fairly standard overhead-bin size — most carry-on suitcases marketed as cabin-approved will fit within those dimensions, but always measure before you travel because Etihad does enforce this. A separate personal item is not included in Economy; your one bag is your one bag.

In Business and First Class, you’re allowed two cabin bags with a combined weight of 12kg, with each individual bag staying within the same 56 × 36 × 23 cm dimensions. You also get a personal item — a bag up to 5kg, maximum 39 × 23 × 19 cm — which sits under the seat in front of you. That’s a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.

Gate enforcement on cabin bag size has tightened across most major carriers in 2026, and Etihad is no exception. If your bag looks oversized at boarding, staff will ask you to check it in — at airport prices. It’s worth weighing your cabin bag before you leave home, particularly if you’re prone to overpacking it.

Checked Baggage by Fare Type

Etihad uses two different systems for checked baggage depending on your route, and knowing which one applies to you matters a lot.

Weight Concept applies to all routes except the United States and Canada. Your allowance is a total weight limit — you can split it across multiple bags as long as no single bag exceeds 32kg.

Piece Concept applies on US and Canada routes. Here, the number of bags is fixed (not a total weight), and each bag has its own per-piece weight limit.

Weight Concept (all routes except US/Canada)

Fare Checked Allowance
Economy Basic 0kg — no checked bag
Economy Value 25kg
Economy Comfort 30kg
Economy Deluxe 40kg
Business Value 35kg
Business Comfort 40kg
Business Deluxe 50kg
First Class up to 50kg

The 32kg per-bag hard limit applies across all fares. Even if you have an Economy Deluxe 40kg allowance, you cannot put 40kg into a single bag — you’d need to split it across at least two bags (e.g. 32kg + 8kg). Etihad will not accept a single bag over 32kg regardless of what you’ve paid or your tier status.

Piece Concept (US and Canada routes)

Cabin Bags Weight per bag
Economy (excl. Basic) 2 bags 23kg each
Business / First 2 bags 32kg each

Maximum dimensions for each checked bag on any route: 70 × 50 × 38 cm.

The Economy Basic Trap

Economy Basic is the cheapest Etihad economy fare, and it includes no checked baggage whatsoever. You get your one 7kg cabin bag and that is it. This catches a lot of people off guard, particularly when booking through comparison sites where the fare type isn’t displayed prominently.

If you realise you’ve booked Basic and need checked luggage, the fix is simple: buy the extra bag online before you fly. Etihad’s online pre-purchase prices are dramatically cheaper than what you’d pay at the airport check-in desk — up to 65% less. For Weight Concept routes, you need to buy at least 4 hours before departure. For Piece Concept (US/Canada) routes, the deadline is 30 hours before departure, so don’t leave it to the morning of your flight.

The scenario I’d most want to avoid is someone assuming they can just sort it at the airport and then finding the extra bag fee is more than the ticket cost. On US/Canada routes especially, airport excess fees are steep. Book it in advance online, or consider upgrading your fare type if you’re buying far enough ahead — the price difference can be smaller than you’d think.

Etihad Business and First Class Baggage

Business Class fares come in three sub-types — Value, Comfort, and Deluxe — and the baggage allowance genuinely varies between them. Business Value gives you 35kg; Business Comfort gives 40kg; Business Deluxe pushes to 50kg. If you’re travelling with heavy bags, it’s worth checking which sub-type you’re on before assuming Business automatically means 50kg.

First Class also allows up to 50kg on Weight Concept routes, with 2 bags at 32kg each on US/Canada routes. Combined with the two cabin bags (12kg combined) and your personal item (5kg), First Class passengers have serious baggage capacity before they pay a penny extra.

On US/Canada Piece Concept routes, Business and First gets 2 bags at 32kg each — considerably more per bag than Economy’s 23kg limit.

Excess Baggage Fees

Etihad’s excess baggage fee structure depends on which concept applies to your route, and fees are quoted in USD on etihad.com. Check etihad.com/en-gb for GBP pricing, though I’d always verify the live figure at time of booking as exchange rates shift fees in real terms.

Weight Concept routes (non-US/Canada):

  • Extra baggage sold in 5kg increments
  • Online: approximately USD $24–54 per 5kg increment, depending on route
  • The Abu Dhabi–London route tends to sit in the mid-range of that scale
  • Online deadline: at least 4 hours before departure

Piece Concept routes (US/Canada):

  • Extra 23kg bag: approximately USD $140 online / $200 at the airport
  • Extra 32kg bag: approximately USD $175 online / $250 at the airport
  • Online deadline: at least 30 hours before departure

Oversized bags (any route): USD $100 per bag each way if your bag exceeds the 70 × 50 × 38 cm limit.

The gap between online and airport pricing is significant enough that even if you’re unsure whether you’ll need extra bags, it’s worth pre-purchasing online and cancelling if your plans change — though do check Etihad’s refund policy on pre-purchased baggage at the time of booking.

Etihad Guest Loyalty Extras

Etihad Guest loyalty members get extra checked baggage, but the way it works differs by tier and it’s not all automatic.

Silver tier: +10kg added automatically to your allowance on Weight Concept routes. You don’t need to do anything — it’s applied when your booking is linked to your Etihad Guest number.

Gold tier: +15kg on Weight Concept routes, but — and this is the part that trips people up — you must select it as a Custom Benefit. It is not added automatically. Log in to your Etihad Guest account, go to your Custom Benefits selection, and actively choose the baggage benefit. If you don’t select it, you won’t receive it. It also does not apply on Economy Basic fares, regardless of tier.

Platinum tier: +20kg on Weight Concept routes, same Custom Benefit requirement as Gold. Same exclusion on Basic fares.

On Piece Concept routes (US/Canada), loyalty tiers earn one additional bag — 23kg for Economy, 32kg for Business and First.

If you’re a Gold or Platinum member and haven’t checked your Custom Benefits recently, it’s worth doing before your next booking. Missing that selection is easy and the extra weight can be the difference between a stress-free check-in and an excess fee.

Special Items Worth Knowing About

Golf clubs are where Etihad genuinely stands out. You can carry one set of golf clubs (up to 15kg) completely free, on top of your standard baggage allowance. This isn’t a reduction of your checked limit — it’s additional. For golf travellers flying to Abu Dhabi or Dubai, this is a significant perk that most other carriers don’t offer in the same way.

Ski and snowboard equipment is carried within your checked allowance — no extra charge as long as it stays within 300cm total (length + width + height). Pack within your weight limit and you’re fine.

Bicycles are accepted within your checked allowance as well, subject to the 300cm size rule. Pedals must be removed, handlebars turned sideways, and tyres deflated before check-in. If your bike pushes you over your allowance, you’ll pay excess baggage rather than a separate sports equipment fee.

Pushchairs and prams are carried free, in addition to your allowance — one per infant. Same for car seats — one free, on top of your standard limit. These are genuinely useful perks for families.

Zamzam water: Etihad allows up to 5 litres of Zamzam water free in checked baggage. This is a thoughtful policy for passengers returning from Hajj or Umrah, and it’s something I’ve seen several passengers not realise until they’re told at check-in.

Smart bags and e-scooters: If your bag has a built-in battery, the battery must be removable and must travel in the cabin with you. Non-removable batteries mean the bag won’t be accepted. Check this before you pack.

Drone batteries: Must be removed from the drone and carried in the cabin. Maximum 160Wh per battery — above that, they’re not accepted at all. This catches a lot of travel photographers out.

Travelling with Infants and Children

Infants (under 2 years old) travelling on a lap ticket get a free checked baggage allowance of up to 10kg on non-US/Canada routes, or up to 23kg on US and Canada routes. This is in addition to the infant items below.

One pushchair travels free for each infant, in addition to your standard allowance. One car seat also travels free per infant. Both of these are carried at no extra cost and don’t reduce your checked bag allowance.

If you’re flying with a young baby, Etihad offers a bassinet (sky cot) on long-haul flights. Your baby needs to be under 11kg in weight and no taller than 75cm. Request this when booking — availability is limited on each aircraft and it’s allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

CPAP and Medical Equipment

CPAP and BiPAP machines are carried free of charge and are not counted against your cabin baggage allowance. Etihad asks that the machine fits within the standard 56 × 36 × 23 cm cabin bag dimensions — most CPAP travel cases do. You also need to notify Etihad at least 48 hours before departure so they can note it on your booking.

Battery rules apply: you must carry sufficient battery for 1.5 times the duration of your flight. Etihad won’t allow you to use a CPAP from the aircraft’s power supply, so battery capacity planning matters on long-haul routes.

Wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and other mobility aids are carried free and do not count against your checked baggage allowance. If your mobility aid has a lithium battery, notify Etihad in advance — the battery will likely need to travel in the cabin.

Codeshare Flights

If your Etihad ticket includes a codeshare segment with another airline, the baggage rules can change. For flights originating or terminating in the US, US Department of Transportation regulations require that the first operating carrier’s baggage policy governs the entire journey. In practice, this often means Etihad’s policy applies if Etihad operates the first leg.

For all other routes, check your booking confirmation carefully. It’s common for the baggage allowance to be stated per segment rather than for the whole journey, and what you’re allowed on one leg may not carry through to a connecting flight on a partner carrier. When in doubt, call Etihad directly with your booking reference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Etihad Economy Basic include a checked bag?

No. Economy Basic is Etihad’s lowest economy fare and includes no checked baggage at all. You are allowed one 7kg cabin bag only. If you need to check a bag, you’ll need to purchase extra baggage online — ideally at least 4 hours before departure for Weight Concept routes, or 30 hours before for US/Canada flights. Buying online is significantly cheaper than paying at the airport.

What is the Etihad cabin bag size limit?

Economy passengers get one cabin bag up to 7kg, maximum 56 × 36 × 23 cm. Business and First Class passengers get two cabin bags with a combined weight of 12kg (same per-bag dimensions), plus a personal item up to 5kg (maximum 39 × 23 × 19 cm). Etihad enforces cabin bag dimensions at boarding, so measure your bag before you travel.

How much does Etihad charge for excess baggage?

On Weight Concept routes (non-US/Canada), excess baggage is sold in 5kg increments at approximately USD $24–54 per increment depending on route, when purchased online. On Piece Concept routes (US/Canada), an extra 23kg bag costs approximately USD $140 online or $200 at the airport. Airport fees are consistently much higher — online pre-purchase saves up to 65%. Check etihad.com/en-gb for current GBP pricing.

Does Etihad allow golf clubs for free?

Yes — and this is one of Etihad’s standout baggage perks. One set of golf clubs (up to 15kg) is carried free of charge on top of your standard checked baggage allowance. You don’t need to use any of your allowance for the clubs. This applies across fare types (including the clubs being free regardless of your tier), making Etihad an excellent choice for golfers heading to the UAE or beyond.

How do Etihad Guest loyalty members get extra baggage?

Silver members automatically receive +10kg on Weight Concept routes — no action needed. Gold and Platinum members receive +15kg and +20kg respectively, but these are Custom Benefits that must be actively selected in your Etihad Guest account. They are not automatic. Neither Gold nor Platinum extra baggage applies on Economy Basic fares. On Piece Concept routes, eligible tiers earn one additional bag (23kg Economy, 32kg Business/First).

What is the difference between Weight Concept and Piece Concept on Etihad?

Weight Concept applies to all routes except US and Canada. Your checked allowance is a total weight, which you can split across multiple bags (no single bag over 32kg). Piece Concept applies on US and Canada routes — here, you get a fixed number of bags (typically two), each with its own weight limit (23kg Economy, 32kg Business/First). The system that applies to your route determines both what’s included and how excess fees are calculated.
