KLM Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin Bag, Checked Luggage and Fees

I booked Economy Light once because it was £40 cheaper than Standard. What I hadn’t factored in was that my usual cabin bag — a perfectly normal 55 x 35 x 25 cm suitcase — wasn’t included. I had to add it at the gate in Amsterdam for considerably more than £40. KLM’s fare structure looks simple until you start packing for it.

KLM Baggage Allowance 2026

KLM now has four economy fare types, not three. Economy Basic — introduced in mid-2025 — is more restricted than Light and isn’t included in most guides yet. Here’s the complete picture, with the correct fees and what’s actually changed in 2026.

KLM baggage at a glance — checked March 2026

Fare Cabin bag Small bag Checked bag
Economy Basic None 40 x 30 x 15 cm None (purchasable)
Economy Light None (purchasable) 40 x 30 x 15 cm None (Europe) / 1 x 23 kg (intl)
Economy Standard 55 x 35 x 25 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 1 x 23 kg
Economy Flex 55 x 35 x 25 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 1 x 23 kg
Premium Comfort 55 x 35 x 25 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 x 23 kg (intl only)
Business 2 x 55 x 35 x 25 cm 40 x 30 x 15 cm 2 x 32 kg

Combined weight limit: 12 kg for Economy cabin bags / 18 kg for Business

KLM hand luggage size

Economy Basic — the most restricted fare

Economy Basic is KLM’s newest and cheapest fare, rolling out from mid-2025. It includes one under-seat small bag only:

  • Small bag: 40 x 30 x 15 cm (under-seat only)
  • No overhead cabin bag included
  • No checked bag included — both must be purchased separately
  • No Flying Blue XP earned on this fare
  • A cabin bag can be added via My Trip up to four hours before departure

If you see a very low KLM fare and want to understand what’s included, check the fare name carefully — Basic and Light look similar in price but the Basic is more restricted.

Economy Light

  • Small bag: 40 x 30 x 15 cm (under-seat)
  • No overhead cabin bag included — add for €15–35 via My Trip
  • No checked bag on European routes; 1 x 23 kg included on intercontinental flights

A laptop bag or small backpack fits the small bag allowance. A standard cabin suitcase does not. On a city break with one bag, Light is fine. Anything more and Standard is usually better value.

Economy Standard and Flex

Both fares include:

  • Cabin bag: 55 x 35 x 25 cm (overhead locker)
  • Small bag: 40 x 30 x 15 cm (under-seat)
  • Combined weight limit: 12 kg for both bags together
  • Checked bag: 1 x 23 kg

The 12 kg combined limit is worth understanding. If your cabin bag is 10 kg, your small bag must be under 2 kg. Packing a laptop in the small bag while your cabin bag is full is fine. Packing two heavy bags is not.

Premium Comfort

Same cabin allowance as Standard/Flex — one cabin bag plus small bag, 12 kg combined — but checked baggage is two bags at 23 kg each on intercontinental routes. Premium Comfort is not available on short-haul European routes.

Business Class

  • 2 cabin bags (each 55 x 35 x 25 cm)
  • Small bag (40 x 30 x 15 cm)
  • 18 kg combined cabin weight
  • 2 x 32 kg checked bags

KLM hand luggage dimensions

Measurement Cabin bag Small bag
Height 55 cm 40 cm
Width 35 cm 30 cm
Depth 25 cm 15 cm

All dimensions include handles and wheels, which is how KLM measures. A bag that is exactly 55 x 35 x 25 cm on the outside including its wheels should be fine.

Recommended: Cabin Max Metz 30L Backpack

The Cabin Max Metz 30L at 45 x 36 x 20 cm fits within KLM’s cabin bag allowance. At 0.5 kg, it leaves nearly the full 12 kg combined limit for your actual belongings.

KLM checked baggage allowance

European routes

Fare Checked bags Weight
Economy Basic None included
Economy Light None included
Economy Standard 1 bag 23 kg
Economy Flex 1 bag 23 kg
Premium Comfort Not available on short-haul
Business 2 bags 32 kg each

International routes

Fare Checked bags Weight
Economy Basic None included
Economy Light 1 bag 23 kg
Economy Standard 1 bag 23 kg
Economy Flex 1 bag 23 kg
Premium Comfort 2 bags 23 kg each
Business 2 bags 32 kg each

Checked bag size limits

  • Maximum total dimensions: 158 cm (length + width + height)
  • Maximum weight per bag: 32 kg — bags heavier than this are not accepted and must be repacked
  • Maximum bags per passenger: 10 pieces total

A standard large suitcase (75 x 50 x 30 cm = 155 cm) fits within the 158 cm limit.

KLM extra baggage cost

Adding a cabin bag to Basic or Light

Add-on Online price
Cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm) €15–35

Add this through My Trip before departure. Adding at the gate costs more.

Extra checked bag fees

Route Online price Airport price
Extra bag — Europe €25–240 Higher
Extra bag — Intercontinental €30–240 Higher
Economy Light checked bag — Europe (first bag) €25 €75

Exact fees depend on route and how far in advance you book. Adding online is consistently cheaper — sometimes by €50 or more per bag.

Overweight baggage fee

This is frequently misreported. KLM does not charge per kilogram for overweight bags. The correct charge is a fixed fee per overweight bag:

Route Overweight fee (23–32 kg)
Europe €75–100
Intercontinental €75–300

Bags over 32 kg are not accepted at all — they must be repacked. Pack to 23 kg if you are on Economy; pack to 32 kg maximum if you have Business allowance.

Oversized bag fees

Route Fee
Europe €75–100
Intercontinental €100–300

Bags exceeding 158 cm total dimensions are considered oversized.

Sports equipment

Skis and snowboard

Free, and replaces your checked bag rather than being an extra charge:

  • Maximum 300 cm total (length + width + height)
  • Maximum 23 kg (Economy) / 32 kg (Business)
  • A ski set = skis + poles + boots. A snowboard set = board + boots.
  • No advance reservation required — bring it to the check-in desk.

This is one of KLM’s better policies. Many airlines charge €40–100 for ski carriage regardless of checked allowance.

Bicycle

Paid service, advance booking required (at least 48 hours before departure via My Trip):

Route Fee
Europe ~€55
USA and Canada ~€125
Rest of world ~€100

Maximum 23 kg. Must be packed appropriately (pedals removed, handlebars turned).

Golf clubs

Free within your checked allowance (max 23 kg, max 158 cm dimensions). No extra charge if it fits.

Musical instruments

Smaller instruments can travel as your cabin bag if they fit within 55 x 35 x 25 cm. Larger instruments need a separate seat booking — contact KLM directly.

Travelling with a baby or child

This section is missing from almost every guide on KLM’s baggage policy. Here is what is actually included.

Infant allowance (under 2, travelling on your lap)

In addition to your normal fare allowance:

  • 1 x 10 kg checked bag
  • 1 hand bag with baby items (55 x 35 x 25 cm, max 10 kg)

Both are free and in addition to whatever your own fare includes. Worth knowing before you assume you need to add bags at booking.

Pushchair and buggy

  • Collapsible pram (max 15 x 30 x 100 cm): free, in addition to normal allowance
  • Can come into the cabin if it fits; gate-checked if not
  • KLM does not provide a car seat — bring your own if needed

Car seat

Free, per child, in addition to normal allowance. Booster seats are not permitted on KLM.

Flying Blue status and baggage

Flying Blue is the shared frequent flyer programme of KLM and Air France. Status earned on either airline counts on both.

In February 2026, Flying Blue updated its elite benefits matrix to confirm that status baggage benefits now explicitly apply to Economy Basic and Light fares — something that wasn’t clear before.

Status Extra bags on Standard/Flex Extra bags on Light or Basic
Silver +1 checked bag +1 checked bag
Gold +1 checked bag +1 checked bag
Platinum +2 checked bags +2 checked bags
Ultimate +2 checked bags +2 checked bags

Practical example: A Flying Blue Silver member who booked Economy Light on a European route gets one free 23 kg checked bag added by their status. That can flip the value calculation on whether Light or Standard was the right fare.

Benefits also extend to a travelling companion on the same booking at Gold and Platinum level.

SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus status (earned on partner airlines like Delta, Korean Air, Air Europa) also provides baggage benefits on KLM flights — typically +1 checked bag for Elite, +2 for Elite Plus. Check your status carrier’s specific agreement.

KLM and Air France codeshares — which rules apply?

On codeshare flights, the operating airline’s baggage policy applies — not the marketing carrier. Your booking confirmation or itinerary receipt is the definitive reference.

In practice, on most KLM-ticketed itineraries with Air France-operated legs through Paris CDG, the entire ticket uses KLM allowances if all flights are on KL flight numbers. If you see AF (Air France) flight numbers in your itinerary, check which aircraft is actually flying — on those legs, Air France rules may apply.

KLM has recently signed codeshare agreements with SAS and ITA Airways. On SAS or ITA-operated legs, those carriers’ policies apply. When in doubt, call KLM before you pack.

KLM vs British Airways vs Lufthansa

Airline Economy cabin bag Weight Economy checked (intl)
KLM Standard 55 x 35 x 25 cm + small bag 12 kg combined 1 x 23 kg
KLM Light Small bag only 1 x 23 kg (intl)
British Airways 56 x 45 x 25 cm + personal item 23 kg combined Fare-dependent
Lufthansa Classic 55 x 40 x 23 cm + personal item 8 kg (cabin only) 1 x 23 kg
Air France Standard 55 x 35 x 25 cm + personal item 12 kg Fare-dependent

British Airways has the most generous cabin bag allowance of the three — larger dimensions and a 23 kg combined weight limit versus KLM’s 12 kg. Lufthansa’s cabin bag is wider but the weight limit is lower. KLM sits in the middle. For the UK airline baggage comparison across budget and full-service carriers, see the full guide.

Check-in tips

  • Online check-in opens 30 hours before departure — via klm.com or the KLM app
  • Add extra bags online via My Trip up to 24 hours before departure, not at the airport
  • The 12 kg combined cabin weight limit is enforced — staff sometimes weigh bags at check-in or at the gate
  • Minimum connection time at Amsterdam Schiphol is 50 minutes for KLM-to-KLM flights; allow more on non-Schengen connections requiring passport control

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the KLM baggage allowance?
It depends on your fare. Economy Standard and Flex include a cabin bag (55 x 35 x 25 cm), small bag (40 x 30 x 15 cm) with 12 kg combined, plus one 23 kg checked bag. Economy Light and Basic include only a small under-seat bag. Economy Basic is KLM’s most restricted fare, introduced mid-2025.

What is the KLM hand luggage size?
The overhead cabin bag is 55 x 35 x 25 cm. The under-seat small bag is 40 x 30 x 15 cm. Both bags together must weigh no more than 12 kg for Economy fares. Business passengers get 18 kg combined and two cabin bags.

What is the KLM Economy Basic fare?
Economy Basic is KLM’s cheapest fare, available from mid-2025. It includes only a small under-seat bag (40 x 30 x 15 cm). No overhead cabin bag, no checked bag, and no Flying Blue XP are included. Both can be added separately.

What is the KLM overweight baggage fee?
KLM charges a fixed fee per overweight bag, not a per-kilogram rate. For bags between 23 and 32 kg, the fee is €75–100 on European routes and €75–300 on intercontinental routes depending on destination. Bags over 32 kg are not accepted and must be repacked.

Do infants get a free bag on KLM?
Yes. Infants under 2 travelling on a lap get one 10 kg checked bag plus one hand bag with baby items (55 x 35 x 25 cm, 10 kg), in addition to the adult’s fare allowance. A collapsible pushchair and car seat are also free.

Does Flying Blue Silver status help on Economy Light?
Yes. As of February 2026, Flying Blue confirmed that Silver status gives +1 free checked bag on Economy Light and Economy Basic fares. On a European Light route that normally includes no checked bag, Silver status adds one 23 kg bag at no extra charge.

What is the KLM checked baggage fee?
Online: €25 for a European route bag (Economy Light), €25–240 for extra bags depending on route. Airport prices are significantly higher — often double. Always add bags online before you arrive.

Can I take skis on KLM for free?
Yes. A ski or snowboard set (skis/board + boots + poles, max 300 cm, max 23 kg) travels free as part of your checked allowance on all KLM fares. No surcharge.

How much does KLM charge for a bicycle?
Bicycle carriage is paid and must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Fees are approximately €55 for European routes, €100 for most long-haul destinations, and €125 for USA and Canada routes.

Which KLM baggage rules apply on codeshare flights?
The operating airline’s rules apply, not KLM’s. Check your booking confirmation to identify which airline is actually flying each leg. If the flight number is AF (Air France), Air France rules apply on that leg.

Can I pool baggage allowance with other passengers on KLM?
Yes, if you are on the same booking. The total checked allowance for the booking can be distributed across bags, as long as no single bag exceeds 32 kg.

Does KLM weigh cabin bags at the gate?
Sometimes. The 12 kg combined limit is enforced. Staff may weigh bags at check-in or at boarding gates if bags look heavy. Packing close to the limit is fine; significantly over it risks a fee or being asked to check the bag.
